We all watch our children grow up, and before we know it they are ready to leave home in pursuit of an education and career. Asian parents are known for their focus on education and career, probably driven by a scarcity of resources they have witnessed in their own lives. As the economies prosper and technology driven change alters the job landscape, it is time to think/rethink how we guide and help our children. I have drawn upon my own life experiences in writing this.
Early on, like most parents in India, I have always had a math & science slant which rubbed off on my two children. The characteristics of the two children are very different – one an outgoing person who likes to mingle with people and the other who is happy to sit down with a book for hours together. An initial exposure to the philosophy of multiple intelligences helped me discuss career path possibilities with my children – and a clear realization that not all need to pursue an engineering/medical degree. Past the initial phase of hesitation, this realization brings a harmonious approach of realizing the child’s interest, capability and education path leading up to their career. It is important to recognize your child’s intelligence area – and not how intelligent they are.
