Roll away (Relative friction of surfaces)

Updated: Sep 25, 2022

In this activity learners will use a rolling tennis ball to measure the relative friction between different surfaces. The key idea is that depending on friction the ball would take different amount of time to travel the same distance, assuming the thrust applied for rolling is kept constant. The activity includes stimulation that prepares the learners for conducting the experiment. This activity also involves teams since rolling, measuring, data collection all need to be done simultaneously.

Learning Objective(s)

Scholastic: Learners will measure relative difference in Friction between surfaces

Skill: Experimentation, Data collection, Data presentation, Data analysis

Materials Needed

Tennis ball (or any rollable object), stop- watch, measuring tape, Chalk piece.
