Speed and Direction (Velocity)

Updated: Sep 11, 2022

In this activity the learners will explore the differences between speed and velocity. They will roll balls (basketball, football etc) on a flat surface and measure the time take to reach point B from point A and thus measure speed. They will plot these speeds on a graph with an appropriate scaling while maintaining accurate direction of motion. They will then have small competition to identify pairs of identical speeds and pairs of identical velocities.

Learning Objective(s)

Skill: Tabular Data, Accurate measurements, Graphs to scale, Team-work, Leadership

Scholastic: Distance, Time, Speed, Velocity

Materials Needed

Balls for rolling, white powder for marking, timers
